The Lord Mayor

On Friday, 11th November 2016, Alderman Dr Andrew Parmley will become the 689th Lord Mayor of the City of London.  The Lord Mayor's Show will follow the next day.
The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor of the City of London presides over its governing bodies, the Court of Aldermen and the Court of Common Council.   Within the City only the Sovereign takes precedence.

Outside the City the Lord Mayor takes precedence with, but after, members of the Cabinet. On behalf of the Sovereign and the Government, the Lord Mayor regularly acts as a host for hospitality provided by the City of London for visiting heads of state and foreign dignitaries.

A dedicated ambassador, the Lord Mayor supports and promotes the City as the world leader in international finance and business services. He travels extensively with business delegations boosting British trade and not simply promoting the markets and services of the City.  Important contacts are made at diplomatic and business level.

He also has a domestic programme of visits which keeps him in touch with regional economic activity and better able to promote the services they provide to an international audience.  His role is enhanced by the entirely non-party political nature of his office and of the City of London.  His activities reflect not only his ceremonial and diplomatic importance, but his position as a trusted spokesman for the business and financial community.

In promoting the City, the Lord Mayor acts in close collaboration with other leading members of the City of London, including the Chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee.  Together with the Court of Common Council, he seeks to ensure that the City’s interests are reflected in London-wide and national policy and development.
